(2) Inter-class exchanges by 4th graders

1) Objectives of the activity
Using e-mails and videoletters, we aim to promote international exchanges by learning about the other’s life style.

2) Steps of the activity

Students watch a videotape mailed from 4th-graders at Wahl-Coates ES.
・Self-introduction, math class, music class, lunch time
・Scenes of going home

Students exchange opinions about contents in the videotape.

Why was there an 11-year-old pupil in the class?
Why are there many people with different colors of skin?
Why did they have soft drink bottles on their desks?
They were having a lunch in a big room.
We think it is nice that they can eat what they like at lunch.
The school looked very spacious.
That they line up when moving from one classroom to another was the same as what we do at our school.

We send our thoughts to Wahl-Coates ES by e-mail.
Replies from Wahl Coates ES
The 11-year-old student is studying with us because the student could not move up to the next grade.
We have soft drinks in the classroom, but we never drink them during class.
Lunch time is the best.
If we are noisy when moving to another classroom, we sometimes have to redo it.
Students introduce life at attached Mihara Elementary School
・They discuss what to introduce.
 ・They introduce themselves in English.
・They introduce a day at school.
 ・They videotape it by themselves.
Students filmed by themselves the scene of going home, how they spend short breaks, how they clean the classrooms, and the scene of swimming, and prepared a videotape.
E-mails from Wahl-Coates ES
It is nice that you can play in the morning after arriving at school.
Why are you all wearing the same clothes?
Do you have fun at lunch time?
Students don’t clean rooms at Wahl-Coates ES, but why do students clean the rooms at yours?
It is nice to have a lot of time to play at school.
What do you do after getting home?

3) Outcomes and issues for the future

Since teachers can’t speak or write each other’s language well, communication did not go smoothly.

Having friends in America, students became willing to get involved in exchanges by looking up differences in life styles, trying to speak English, and creating videotapes by themselves.
We would like to promote exchanges not only on a school or class basis, but also on a subject basis. For this purpose, we expect more teachers to get involved in the exchanges.
